DIY Wool Dryer Balls – Ditch the Toxic Fabric Softener

Who loves using fabric softener and the way it makes your laundry smell? I used to! These days, it actually irritates my sinuses when I lay on sheets with heavy smells. Plus, over time, fabric softener gunked up my laundry and the washer itself.

Once I discovered that it was the fabric softener that was causing my issues, I moved on to dryer sheets.   No help! These still caused me problems with sleeping on heavily scented sheets.

What to do?

I discovered wool dryer balls! And so, why not make it a DIY project? Continue reading “DIY Wool Dryer Balls – Ditch the Toxic Fabric Softener”

Cleaning Out that Kitchen Junk Drawer

Junk drawers … most of us have at least one.  I have usually had a kitchen “junk drawer” with odds and ends that I SWEAR I will keep organized, with only the essentials that are needed.  Yeah, well …

"Kitchen Junk Drawer 01 | www.stephsneckofthewoods.com"

I am not the sole person responsible for the junk, I assure you.  Other family members tend to use this drawer as a “shove-all” space.   I tend to use it as a “current project” space.

If we are doing a repair on the sink, reversed osmosis spout (which seems to need constant repair in my household) or some similar project, I tend to keep the tools, caulk, adhesive, putty knife, cutting blade, etc. handy, and in that drawer.  But then, it stays, long after the project is complete.  Guilty! Stop Mindless Snacking with this Simple Tip

If you have a challenge with snacking, shortly after a meal, try this trick.

"Brush Your Teeth - Dental | www.stephsneckofthewoods.com"Brush your Teeth

I am one of the many who find themselves snacking shortly (within 30 minutes) after a meal.  But why?

Sometimes boredom, other times the “fullness” of the meal has passed, and I feel it is time for something sweet.  Yes, unfortunately, the snacks are rarely healthy. Continue reading “Stop Mindless Snacking with this Simple Tip”

How to Cook Perfect Bacon

Lately, I have seen many methods for cooking bacon.  And although the end result of each method is good yummy bacon, many use fancy air fryers, messy skillets or other equipment that not all of us have. Here is how I prepare perfect bacon, with less mess.

Equipment/Ingredients:
Rectangular cookie sheet
Aluminum Foil, long enough to cover the entire sheet (optional)
Sliced Bacon
Tongs
Plate with Paper Towels

That’s it!  I choose to use aluminum foil for super easy cleanup.  This is not a necessity as I understand that the health effects of foil are questionable.

Ok, enough of that … on to getting that bacon cooked! Continue reading “How to Cook Perfect Bacon”

Dealing with a Setback. Continue On? Give Up? What Do You Do?

How do you deal with a setback in your life?  Do you have the determination to keep going?  Do you give up, feeling it will never work anyway?  Or do you find yourself somewhere in between?

For our purposes here, let’s just talk about setbacks in relation to improving our health, increasing our movement and in turn, having positive results in reaching our goals.

I have spoken many times about my love (obsession) for my Fitbit One Wireless Activity Plus Sleep Tracker.  For me, it’s been a fabulous way to track movement and keep me motivated.  But, even with a tool like this, there can be setbacks. Why Should I Even Worry About Moving?

"Human Body | www.stephsneckofthewoods.com"Let’s talk for a moment about our bodies.  How do you feel about yours?  Are you happy with it overall?  Do you nit-pick all of your imperfections?  Are you frustrated that maybe it doesn’t look the way you want it to?  Or maybe it is not aging the way you had hoped.

How about mobility?  Are you stiff, sore, and achy?  Do you feel your body has been good to you?  The real question is … have you been good to your body?

There are as many views about bodies and what they “should be”, as there are body differences.  Of course, if we pay attention to the media, it’s about our size, what we are wearing, or how beautiful we are … on the outside; what we should buy to make us fabulous, etc. Continue reading “Why Should I Even Worry About Moving?”

Ancestry DNA, Should I, or Shouldn’t I? And Do We Have the Right to Know About Our Ancestors?

DNA testing for genealogy seems to be all the craze now.  Some jump on the bandwagon and take the tests right away, others seem more hesitant.  Is it accurate? How will the results be used?  Is our information really private?  What if I find out something … unexpected?!

All of these same questions went through my mind.  Ultimately though, I did take the test, through Ancestry.  My sisters, father and adult children, took it as well.  And the results?  Well, my dad is my dad, and my sisters are my sisters, my children are my children, no surprises there. 😉 Continue reading “Ancestry DNA, Should I, or Shouldn’t I? And Do We Have the Right to Know About Our Ancestors?”
